About GAIA

A society for a
more independent life

GAIA is the Society for Self-Sufficiency, based in Vienna — a supporting and knowledge community that collects, checks and shares knowledge on energy, health, education and economy. Carried by a growing community and three words: independence, togetherness, for one another.

Profile

What GAIA stands for

GAIA stands for the Gesellschaft für autarke Energie, technische Innovation und Altruismus — the Society for Self-Sufficient Energy, Technical Innovation and Altruism. Founded in Vienna on 19 September 2011, it is today a supporting and knowledge community that brings together people seeking more independence.

We do not see ourselves as a provider but as a platform: we collect knowledge, check it carefully and share it openly — along the four pillars of energy, health, knowledge and economy. This work is carried by the members of the community.

The four pillars

Our range of topics

01 Energy & Technology

Where tomorrow’s energy comes from

We accompany people and projects working on an independent, decentralised energy supply — from proven technology to new approaches such as neutrinovoltaics. We examine, put things into context and openly share what we learn along the way.

02 Health & Nutrition

Living healthily, deciding for yourself

Health begins with what is on our plate and with the knowledge available to us. We present nutrition, prevention and alternative therapeutic approaches — as a basis for informed decisions of your own.

03 Knowledge & Education

Independence starts in the mind

We promote free learning, alternative educational initiatives and the open exchange of knowledge — for everyone who wants to understand, question and think further for themselves instead of relying on ready-made answers.

04 Economy & Finance

An economy that serves people

From new concepts of money to an unconditional basic income, we explore paths to an economy that makes independence possible — clearly, critically and close to practice.

Community

Carried by people, not by corporations

Behind GAIA there is no company but a community of around 2,900 people united by one wish: more independence — in thinking as in everyday life.

Together we achieve what is denied to the individual.
