EU directive set to make balcony power plants harder
New EU IEC standard for balcony power plants
The new EU IEC standard for balcony power plants (plug-in solar devices) could have considerable effects on the operation of existing systems. In particular, the standard plans to no longer allow balcony power plants to be connected to standard household Schuko sockets as before, but only to special feed-in sockets or fixed connections. This is intended to increase electrical safety, protect people and devices and ensure grid stability. For operators of existing balcony power plants, this means that simple connection via a normal socket could in future be restricted or no longer permitted. This would entail technically more complex and more expensive installations.
At present the standard has not yet been finally adopted, and Germany is seeking exceptions in order to keep the previous simple access possible. Until then, the existing rules continue to apply (e.g. max. 800 watts feed-in, connection to Schuko sockets permitted subject to certain safety standards). Overall, the new IEC standard means a tightening of connection conditions, which can significantly affect the market for balcony power plants and their users, above all through possible additional costs and restrictions on installation and use.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Key points of the new IEC standard for balcony power plants
- Ban on connection to conventional Schuko sockets, use only of special feed-in sockets or fixed connections
- Goal: increasing household safety and grid stability
- Possible additional costs and greater complexity of installation
- Standard not yet finally adopted; Germany is trying to obtain exceptions for existing practical solutions
Current situation for existing balcony power plants
- As long as the standard is not binding, the rules of max. 800 watts feed-in and connection to Schuko sockets continue to apply
- Existing systems can mostly still be used at present, but future new installations could be affected by the new regulation
- Operators should follow the development of the standard and its implementation closely
This new IEC standard thus stands for increased safety, but also brings changes for users of existing and future systems.[3][4][8][9][7]
