The Society for Self-Sufficient Energy, Technical Innovation and Altruism – GAIA for short (Gesellschaft für autarke Energie, technische Innovation und Altruismus) – is a freely financed supporting and knowledge community based in Vienna, Austria. Founded on 19 September 2011, GAIA sees itself not as a provider but as a platform: it collects knowledge, reviews it carefully and shares it openly with everyone seeking more independence – in thinking as in everyday life.
The work of the Society for Self-Sufficiency rests on four pillars. Energy is about a decentralised, independent supply – from proven technology to new approaches. The health pillar focuses on nutrition, prevention and self-determined decisions. Under the heading of knowledge, the platform promotes free learning and the open exchange of insights. And in the field of economy, GAIA explores ways of doing business that serve people.
The GAIA platform is supported by around 2,900 members. Behind it there is no corporation, but a community of people who voluntarily support what matters to them. The work is financed exclusively by voluntary supporting contributions – without advertising and without commercial self-interest. Almost all content is freely accessible and is meant to remain so; membership is a form of support that keeps the editorial and technical work independent.
In short, three words sum up the community’s self-image: independence, togetherness, mutual support. The goal of the Society for Self-Sufficiency is a growing movement that preserves and shares knowledge and empowers people to live more independently.
