Wikipedia co-founder urges the public not to trust the website (any more)
Wikipedia is one of the ten most visited websites in the world. Can it (still) be trusted as a reliable source?
Co-founder Larry Sanger is now warning the public not to trust the website he helped create.
“You can count on there being an establishment view,” Sanger admitted, explaining that the site’s original design had been destroyed.
Wikipedia was originally created as an open online resource committed to neutrality. Between 2004 and 2009, Sanger says, Wikipedia was a pioneer in providing news from an unbiased perspective, but that changed quickly.
Users were able to edit various pages and discuss the information from both sides of the platform. Now it is almost impossible for the average person to take part in edits at all. “If you edit anything at all, you will be severely warned or kicked out,” Sanger said, noting that this often happens with articles that are “unimportant”.
Sanger believes that Wikipedia is completely influenced by the establishment, which has turned the site into a “battleground for one version of the truth”, as host Freddie Sayers pointed out. […] Sanger claims across the board that Wikipedia is “reliably the establishment point of view”, which is ironic considering that its libertarian co-founders were against the establishment.
