20 people test a basic income for one year
Twenty people who can test for a year what it is like to live with a basic income.
Financed by donations, given away by a non-profit NGO: on 22 July, 20 basic incomes of 12,000 euros each will be raffled. Anyone can take part.
The corona crisis shows that our social system is not crisis-proof. Michael Bohmeyer, founder of Mein Grundeinkommen, recently told the newspaper taz:
“A basic income would make more sense than ever, especially when you consider that our world of work will change profoundly in the coming years through digitalisation, even without corona.”
For six years, Mein Grundeinkommen (German) has been giving people the opportunity to experience how a basic income makes each individual more resilient in a crisis. Already 627 basic incomes of 1,000 euros a month for one year each have been financed by donations and raffled.
Instead of paralysing existential fear, the winners have the strength and space for a career change, for looking after children and people in need of care, or for social engagement. Winner Valentina reports:
“With the basic income, my husband can take a year of parental leave to experience the first, so important and wonderful time of our child’s life up close.”
Soon it will be time again: we are drawing 20 basic income winners and warmly invite you to join in.
The online draw takes place live on Wednesday, 22 July, at 7 pm
Draw of 20 unconditional basic incomes in the livestream on the Mein Grundeinkommen website (German)
Taking part is free of charge. Anyone who registers on the Mein Grundeinkommen (German) website can take part, regardless of nationality or age. – That children, too, can handle winning an unconditional basic income well is proven by twelve-year-old Dafina (German), who won in January 2020. Dafina’s first thought, when her mother told her about the win, was to pay for household help – then she would have more time with her parents. She has already fulfilled another big wish: “I’ve started playing the saxophone. We also wanted to pay for that with the money.”
Mein Grundeinkommen is both a non-profit start-up and a young NGO. Donations are collected via crowdfunding, and as soon as 12,000 euros have been raised, they are raffled as an unconditional basic income of 1,000 euros a month. The response is huge: founded five years ago, today we are fuelling the debate on unconditional basic income with more than 1.5 million users and 100,000 large and small donors.
