Advance care planning brings peace of mind

Advance care planning brings peace of mind

Planning ahead gives security – for you and your family

Following on from last week’s introduction to my work in holistic health and nursing care (German), I would now like to address the importance of well-thought-out advance care planning. It brings peace of mind, because your wishes will be respected even in an emergency. We often don’t like to talk about chronic illness, the need for care, accidents, dementia or the end of life – and yet they are part of life. That makes it all the more important to create clarity and security in good time.

In a confidential initial consultation, I analyse your ideas, needs and any concerns together with you – and, if you wish, with your relatives. This short analysis forms the basis for reliable decisions in challenging life situations.

What “advance care planning” means

Timely advance care planning provides security and orientation – not only for those affected, but also for the people they care about. It helps to clarify important questions before it becomes necessary – clearly, self-determinedly and responsibly.

  • What do a living will and a lasting power of attorney cover?
  • What medical measures do I want in an emergency?
  • Who should decide on my behalf?
  • What do I expect of the people I trust?
  • How do I envisage my funeral?

My tip: Don’t leave your relatives, in a situation that is already emotionally stressful, with decisions they neither want to make nor are prepared to make. There are many important questions that have to be answered quickly in an emergency. If you don’t clarify them in advance, your loved ones will have to answer them for you – often in uncertainty and under time pressure. Then they no longer have a choice – and often no orientation either.
