Christopher Chyba: electricity from the Earth's magnetic field
Revolutionary idea: electricity from the Earth’s magnetic field
Christopher Chyba (astrobiologist and professor of astrophysics, USA) is working on the revolutionary idea of obtaining electricity from the Earth’s magnetic field – with a simple metal cylinder. First measurements already show a minimal voltage. While the usual methods of generating electricity are established worldwide, scientists are increasingly researching alternative approaches. Chyba and his team may now have achieved an important breakthrough.
For several years Christopher Chyba has been working at Princeton University in the US state of New Jersey on making the Earth’s magnetic field usable as an energy source. As with many new discoveries in physics, his idea also meets with sceptics who doubt that it can be used widely. But Chyba’s latest experiments give grounds for optimism: with his simple apparatus he was able, for the first time, to measure an electrical voltage – albeit a very small one.
