Cobalt – are children toiling for our electric cars?
In case an opponent of electric cars once again rails, in ignorance, about electric cars, cobalt
and child labour: without high-strength parts that can only be made with the help of cobalt (an alloying metal), there would be no combustion engines at all! They would fly apart in no time.

Cobalt is an extremely hard and heat-resistant raw material, which is why it is indispensable for making particularly wear-resistant and heat-resistant iron alloys for industry. Cobalt is used above all to produce cutting tools, high-performance drills and artificial joints, but also to build hardened car parts such as crankshafts, connecting rods, camshafts and valve seat rings, aircraft engines and turbines. The element is also used in alloys for 3D printing, in the manufacture of catalysts, for example for desulphurising petrol, in the production of paints and as a component of modern lithium-ion batteries.
