Questions about supplying yourself with food.

When is the right time to plant potatoes? Now would be a good time to start. That is why we are once again reminding you of the potato pyramids, with an offer from our member Johannes Kühmayer.

• What are the best conditions for potatoes to ripen?
• How can I tell that the potatoes are ready to harvest?
• Who can answer these questions?

These days we buy potatoes at the supermarket, in an organic shop or directly from the farmer. As long as supplies are secure, the questions above do not arise. The answers most of us would have to give to them show how far we have moved away from nature. And if supplies fail because of a poor harvest or a “blackout” scenario, we will only notice when it is too late. We can change that if we take responsibility for ourselves again! One option, a small contribution, is to grow your own potatoes and gain experience! Where space is limited, the potato pyramid gives a good yield. Now would be a good time to start. With potato pyramids – for example as shown here – you can secure your basic supply with your own potatoes. All you need is about 1 m² of space.

An offer to go with it

For those who want to try taking more responsibility for their own lives, we have put together a special offer with Johannes Kühmayer (www.holz-natur.at (German), GAIA member): The wood for the construction comes from his own forest and is exclusively black pine felled according to the phases of the moon – in other words, of the highest quality. He offers the necessary raw materials to anyone interested as follows:

• Potato pyramid, version 1: EUR 72.00 plus 5 x 80 mm screws at EUR 8.00 = EUR 80.00
• Potato pyramid, version 2: EUR 90.00 plus 5 x 80 mm screws at EUR 10.00 = EUR 100.00

P.S.: Built with nails, both pyramids are only marginally cheaper (about EUR 2–3), so screws are preferred here.

Then all you need is good soil and seed potatoes. If we help each other, we can manage that too! So if you are interested, contact me by email at gottfried.herrmann@gaia-energy.org. We will then coordinate the logistics, transport and, if needed, setting up and filling the pyramids together.
