Wright Energy Storage Technologies (WEST) has been manufacturing highly successful storage systems made of supercapacitors for over 8 years. Well over 60 MW have already been installed by WEST itself in South Africa, where power cuts are a regular occurrence. Now the company wants to offer this technology in Europe too – and has chosen GAIA for marketing. SuperCap technology heralds a new era for energy storage, because capacitors are electrostatic power stores with numerous advantages. Many disadvantages of chemical batteries are thus eliminated.
What are capacitors?
Capacitors are electronic components that have always been built and used to store electricity. Alessandro Volta (German) built the first capacitor as early as 1745. Wound paper capacitors with metal foil electrodes have been in use since 1876 and have been constantly improved. Today there is hardly a circuit board without a capacitor on it.
The supercapacitors (supercaps) used by WEST, also called ultracapacitors, are electrochemical capacitors with a wafer-thin graphene coating – a further development of conventional paper-wound capacitors.
By their nature, supercapacitors have a lower energy density than conventional batteries. However, their power density is impressively higher. As a result, these supercapacitors can be charged and discharged much faster and also survive far more charging cycles. WEST has used these key advantages to develop next-generation power storage.
And most important of all: unlike lithium-ion batteries, capacitors carry no fire load whatsoever.
What makes WEST power storage special?
Because of their design with electrostatic charge carriers – the supercapacitors – WEST power storage units can absorb and release energy very quickly. In use, the full storage capacity is permanently available, because supercaps can be fully discharged and degrade negligibly. They can store electricity almost without loss for months and work without problems for up to 45 years, even in the most adverse weather conditions. Two designs allow wall mounting or space-saving stacking on the floor. WEST power storage units can be extended as needed at any time during operation, so the storage system can be adapted at will. 10 years of flawless operation at 90% capacity are guaranteed. And should a SuperCap inside ever become faulty, you unscrew the housing and plug in a new one :)

WEST power storage units consist of components that can be replaced individually by the user.
Should a capacitor or part of the BMS become faulty, any user can replace the parts themselves. For every single circuit board can be replaced. This also applies if a module no longer holds the guaranteed capacity – capacitors can be added.

WEST power storage units consist of components that can be replaced individually by the user.
Should a capacitor or part of the BMS become faulty, any user can unscrew the housing and replace the parts themselves. Each circuit board can be replaced individually. This also applies if a module no longer holds the guaranteed capacity – capacitors can be added.
