"Lernen ist wie Atmen" – the 2nd edition of the book is here!

A moment ago the lorry unloaded the heavy pallets. Quickly unpacked, it now smells nicely of freshly printed paper. And it also feels good to finally hold the pages of the 2nd edition in our hands. Over 800 copies of the first edition inspired a wide readership, and demand for a second edition was great.

The 2nd edition of our book meets a completely changed readership. In 2017, the idea that learning outside school was possible at all was considered the eccentric notion of a few outsiders. Since then, all parents, whether they wanted to or not, have had to deal with forms of learning outside school. The number of children withdrawn from school has exploded since then, and alternative learning projects are springing up like mushrooms.

Parents who are still unsure are looking for role models who could show them the way into unknown freedom. In this situation, the voices of people who can report on personal experiences with self-determined learning naturally gain greatly in value. At the request of many new interested readers, we therefore decided to reprint, even though “Lernen ist wie Atmen” has always been available as an e-book.

Some of the children this book is about are now young adults. The concern about their future that still resonates in some of the contributions has fortunately proved unfounded.

Enthusiasm works like fertiliser.

Learning out of enthusiasm is the most natural, normal and also simplest thing, because it simply happens. We don’t need to think about it – learning simply takes place! It is as natural as breathing, laughing, sleeping, dreaming… That is how I see and feel it every day. Yes, everyone can do it!

When we give our thoughts free rein, discover the world with curiosity and are simply awake, it happens always and everywhere. I would even say: we cannot not learn. Every perception, experience or discovery, however small, does something to us and is stored in our cells. It influences our actions and thoughts in the future. In this process, enthusiasm acts like “fertiliser”, to put it in Gerald Hüther’s words.
