Scholé news November 2019
The folders and flyers for FREE CHOICE OF EDUCATION are back from the printers!
Although we still have to design the accompanying website, I would already like to present them to you proudly: the occupational therapist Karin Schaffer and I wrote the texts, my husband contributed the drawings and the graphic design was done by Laura Sperl, who also looked after our book “Lernen ist wie Atmen” (Learning is like breathing). The campaign “Freie Bildungswahl” (Free choice of education) is the continuation of the Bildungsfreiheit (freedom of education) initiative. We dropped the word Bildungsfreiheit because some people interpreted it as “free of education”, which of course is not at all what we intended…:-))
The aim of our FREE CHOICE OF EDUCATION campaign is to bridge the gaps between the different paths of education and to promote diversity: depending on a family’s circumstances and a child’s individual talents and needs, it should be possible to choose freely the path of education that suits best. Our goal will have been reached when EVERY CHILD, regardless of its parents’ income, can choose between regular school, alternative schools, free schools, home education and informal paths of learning, and can switch between them at any time. A good deal of awareness-raising will probably still be needed to achieve this – and our brochures are meant to contribute to that.
We do not want simply to leave them lying around, but, as far as possible, to hand them personally to interested people on suitable occasions. For example on 19 November, the 30th anniversary of children’s rights. On that day, a legal congress on children’s rights, organised by a young law student named Sebastian Öhner, will take place from 1.30 pm at the Haus der Ingenieure, Eschenbachgasse 9 (Vienna).
If you would like to order folders and flyers to distribute among the people around you, please get in touch with me! By joining forces, we will set the urgently needed constructive changes in our education system in motion – I am convinced of that.

Book tip – “Lernen ist wie Atmen” (Learning is like breathing)
Together with two unschooling mothers, Gudrun Totschnig and Sigrid Haubenberger, we published it ourselves.
We all feel that the time is ripe for this many-voiced account of how unschooling can be lived in practice. Order your own copy on the GAIA marketplace, with a 10 % discount for members. The book is in German.
