Zoom exposed as a data octopus?
“The Intercept” reports that the company “Zoom.us” can see into video conferences.
The investigative news site “The Intercept” reported on Tuesday that Zoom video calls are not end-to-end encrypted between users and that the company could see into sessions. Large companies in the USA have already banned its use. GAIA relies on European solutions.
Worrying, or hardly surprising? Either way, Zoom is increasingly under fire. Everyone can draw their own conclusions about the reasons. The Austrian daily Der Standard published an article based on “The Intercept” and writes:
The concerns regarding security and data protection are “considerable”.
TO THE ARTICLE IN DER STANDARD (German)
Within GAIA we also often use video conferences. We used to run the open-source software Jitsi. It works superbly within Europe. As our communication became increasingly international, however, we were faced with reduced quality, because all participants had to connect to one of our local IP addresses in Vienna. Over long distances this caused unwanted latency, resulting in poor quality and even dropped connections.
Since then we have been using the European solution Whereby.com (formerly Appear.in) with 3 virtual rooms.
Update of 15 April 2020: we have removed the discount link that used to be here, as Whereby has discontinued its referral programme.
