Popular initiative clears the hurdle to parliament

Popular initiative clears the hurdle to parliament

The votes were counted on Monday, 9 May 2022.

The second popular initiative “BGE umsetzen!” (“Implement UBI!”), this time brought by all the basic income initiatives together, was supported 168,981 times. Are we satisfied?

On the one hand, it is important to have cleared the hurdle into parliament; on the other hand, we know that there is still a long way to go to a referendum adopting a concrete UBI law. How quickly will we travel it?

6,361,579 votes would have been 100% approval in Austria. The first UBI popular initiative at the end of 2019 achieved 70,000 votes. If approval for a UBI keeps increasing at the same pace, we will have a large majority of over 5 million votes in 2032. Will our existing system hold out that long? What will our planet look like in 2032 if we have not stepped out of the competition for financial profit before then?

Generation Grundeinkommen

The question of how we balance the social, the economic and the environment as the basis of our lives remains important. A UBI offers important approaches to solutions that still lie outside what is politically feasible. Our greatest wish is to start on these solutions with a fruitful debate. Perhaps the reading in the National Council will provide an important starting signal. We will work towards that.

Thank you to everyone who supported us. We are heading in the right direction.
