Lower Austria is often and fondly called “the wide land”.

I can very well imagine that this slogan was inspired by the Weinviertel. For it is the vastness that captivates locals and tourists alike. The Weinviertel is one of the regions in Austria where you can truly enjoy a view stretching far to the horizon.

The primeval sea that covered today’s Weinviertel 17 million years ago was certainly vast too. Even today, many Weinviertel wine cellars contain sand that comes from this ancient sea. In this sand you can still find shells and other fossils – the silent witnesses of the prehistoric ocean.

The weathered shell limestone in the soil, found for example very often around Falkenstein, also comes from this ancient sea. Today it is a real natural treasure, from which the Weinviertel wines draw their unique minerality.

The primeval sea has long since disappeared. What remains is a unique natural and cultural landscape in which you can “recharge your batteries and experience nature”. With this excursion, the author would like to take you on a journey through the Weinviertel. You will visit the most impressive, most beautiful and most legendary places in the whole region. The journey is divided into 11 categories, so there is certainly something for everyone interested in the Weinviertel.

This documentation offers geological and historical background information and turns its gaze to legendary tales and to wildly romantic, secluded places, where viewers are invited to recharge and enjoy the beauty of nature. The journey through the Weinviertel also leads to special tourist destinations. It shows trails that invite you to go hiking and places that invite you to linger. Finally, a particularly impressive window to the stars opens up for you.
