Rethinking education – knowledge in freedom
Access to education: decentralised, free and worldwide
For more than a decade, one of the largest alternative education movements in Europe has been emerging in the German-speaking world. What began as a one-man initiative has developed into a comprehensive platform that combines free educational offerings, digital tools and a clear vision: education should be freely accessible, organised decentrally and shaped by parents and learners themselves.
At its centre is the idea that children should develop a joy of learning – with content that they actually need for their lives. The initiative “Wissen schafft Freiheit” (knowledge creates freedom) aims to make basic knowledge, learning methods and personal development freely available. This is not only about subject content such as mathematics, languages or natural sciences, but equally about psychological stability, parent-child relationships, health, exercise and the ability to learn independently.
What has been created so far
Over the years, several supporting pillars have been built up:
-
Networking groups in Central Europe Regional groups enable exchange between parents, teachers, young people and initiatives. The aim is to strengthen local educational structures and promote independent solutions on the ground.
-
The online timetable Free sessions take place every day – from mathematics and natural sciences to creative workshops such as cooking, drawing or personal development. The courses are led partly by adults and partly by young people themselves. The offering runs from the morning into the evening and can be used without access restrictions.
-
The WSF course (Wissen schafft Freiheit course) The heart of the movement is an extensive media library with videos, materials and workbooks. Topics include:
-
learning methods and memory training
-
mathematics and basic arithmetic
-
languages and memorisation strategies
-
health and natural development
-
psychological basics
-
parent-child dynamics
All content is free of charge and can be downloaded anonymously. No personal data is requested. The materials can be stored decentrally and are freely accessible – a deliberately chosen model for independence.
My appeal: rethinking education – my vision for a free future, approx. 15 min (German)
The vision: decentralising educational power
The WSF initiative pursues three central goals:
- Decentralisation Educational decisions should once again lie closer to communities, schools and families. Regions should be able to decide for themselves which educational paths make sense for their children.
- Free choice in education Parents should be able to choose between state, private, Montessori, homeschooling or free learning models. Responsibility for education is understood as an individual task – not an exclusively state one.
- Free worldwide access to basic education Every child should have access to basic skills: reading, writing, arithmetic – and above all the ability to learn independently.
International expansion
A next step in development is multilingualism. The existing course is to be translated into numerous languages to make it available worldwide. Modern AI-supported tools now enable realistic dubbing into different languages without losing the personal authenticity of the content.
The first content already exists in Spanish, Arabic and Burmese, among others. Especially in regions with limited access to education – for refugee children, for example – materials are intended to help build basic skills independently.
In the long term, the WSF course is to be expanded several times and made freely accessible in as many language areas as possible.
Organisational reality
The movement is at a structural turning point. For years, the initiator was almost solely responsible for content, organisation and expansion. With its growing international orientation, there is now a need for a core team to take over translation, technology, organisation and communication.
The plan is to build up a permanent team to enable scaling and professionalisation. At the same time, additional projects are to be created to secure long-term financial independence:
- book projects
- a magic course
- an adult academy or school of life
In future, these offerings are to contribute to stable financing without creating a permanent dependence on donations.

“Wissen schafft Freiheit” stands for a clear idea: education as a freely accessible foundation for self-responsible people. The initiative combines digital tools, decentralised structures and an international perspective with a focus on basic skills.
Our aim is not a small-scale reform, but a long-term transformation: away from centralised control, towards self-determined learning – worldwide, free of charge and accessible to all.
