Spain and its idea of a basic income
Spain’s economy minister is thinking aloud about introducing a basic income.
Austrian broadcaster ORF reported on it yesterday in ZIB Nacht and asked the economist and film-maker Christian Tod to explain the topic from his point of view. Christian Tod and his film “Free Lunch Society” are also a fixed part of the case for a basic income at Generation Grundeinkommen. We want to bring the unconditional basic income into a nationwide debate. Support this with your signature for the current citizens’ initiative!
The Spanish government is working to roll out a universal basic income as soon as possible, as part of a battery of actions aimed at countering the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Economy Minister Nadia Calviño. But the government’s broader ambition is that basic income becomes an instrument ‘that stays forever, that becomes a structural instrument, a permanent instrument,’ she said. (Bloomberg)
Christian Tod makes the case for introducing a basic income in a Skype conversation. Here is the video, and the link to the ORF media library (German) with the full report (available until 15 April 2020).
Take part in the citizens’ initiative
Until the end of 2021 at the latest, everyone entitled to vote can support the following demand at any municipal office in Austria with photo ID (or online from anywhere in the world with a mobile phone signature):

We call on the legislator to introduce an unconditional basic income (UBI) by means of federal constitutional provisions. It should enable every person whose main residence is in Austria to live a life of human dignity and to participate genuinely in society. The amount, financing and implementation are to be enshrined in law following a process in which civil society plays a decisive part.
How can I take part in the citizens’ initiative?

Please support our work.
Please consider a supporting membership of Generation Grundeinkommen, so that we have the resources to promote the citizens’ initiative ourselves. Please think about a small regular donation to our association. Many thanks, Helmo Pape, chair of Generation Grundeinkommen
