Neutrinovoltaics: energy from every cubic centimetre
Neutrinovoltaics innovation • from area to volume
Neutrinovoltaics can be understood as a multimodal concept for harvesting ambient energy that goes beyond the limits of conventional photovoltaics. Instead of relying solely on visible sunlight, it seeks to use a spectrum of omnipresent but subtle energy channels – including background radiation (cosmic particles, electromagnetic fields), thermal fluctuations and mechanical vibrations. In specially developed graphene-silicon heterostructures, these interactions can be coupled with lattice vibrations at the quantum level, turning the bulk material into a continuous energy generator that works day and night regardless of weather or light conditions. Although neutrino interactions themselves are extremely rare, they serve as a symbol for the broader class of invisible energies. This approach shifts the paradigm from surface-limited solar cells to a future in which every cubic centimetre of material contributes to sustainable, decentralised energy generation.
The title image shows the CEO of the Neutrino® Energy Group with a prototype of a multilayer wafer of the kind to be used in the NEUTRINO® Power Cube in future. According to the company, this early prototype already converts more than 500 W of usable energy from the energy sources described, which constantly surround us.
Energy sources
- Neutrinos and weakly interacting particles Fundamental neutrino interactions – e.g. neutrino-electron scattering, CEνNS, non-standard interactions (NSI) – are real but extraordinarily rare at the terrestrial level. Although they are not a practical energy source today, they inspire material concepts that are sensitive to ultra-weak interactions with particles.
- Cosmic radiation High-energy muons and secondary particles from cosmic radiation can leave energy in the form of ionisation tracks or momentum transfers within a lattice. Although the flux is limited, this energy is omnipresent. The effect is small but constant and relevant for volume coupling.
- Ambient electromagnetic fields Radio-frequency (RF), microwave and other electromagnetic background signals can be harvested with nano-rectennas, metamaterial coatings or similar structures. This is an established technology with extremely low energy consumption.
- Thermal and infrared fluctuations Temperature gradients or micro-fluctuations in the infrared spectrum can be converted into electricity using thermoelectric or pyroelectric mechanisms. Thermal energy harvesting can reach several tens to a few hundred milliwatts per 0.2 m² with a moderate ΔT or gentle temperature changes, provided you design real temperature gradients or fluctuations across the entire structure.
- Mechanical micro-vibrations Ambient noise, vibrations or seismic oscillations can be converted into electrical energy via piezoelectric or triboelectric elements. With typical ambient movements, vibrations contribute power in the µW/cm³ range (piezo) or mW/m² range (tribo) – usually in the milliwatt range overall for thin wafers, unless you stack the thickness, tune resonances or deploy them in places with strong vibrations.
- Geophysical field fluctuations Weak, fluctuating geomagnetic or electrostatic fields can supply traces of usable energy through coupling via inductive or capacitive structures.
Key formulas
This equation expresses the electrical energy obtained from invisible radiation spectra through volumetric integration:
P(t) = η ·∫ V Φ_eff(r,t) · σ_eff(E) dV
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P(t) | Electrical power generated as a function of time |
| \eta | Efficiency of the entire conversion (graphene-silicon system, including losses) |
| \Phi_{amb}(r,t) | Flux density of ambient radiation (neutrinos, invisible spectra, thermal fluctuations) at position r and time t |
| \sigma_{eff}(E) | Effective interaction cross-section, depending on material and energy |
| V | Volume of the active material (3D integration range) |
This symbolic short form stands for the paradigm shift from 2D (photovoltaics) to 3D (neutrinovoltaics):
P ≈ η · Φ · V
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P | Electrical power obtained |
| \eta | Conversion efficiency |
| \Phi | Ambient energy flux (effective density of invisible radiation) |
| V | Volume of the active material (not just surface) |

Conclusion
Neutrinovoltaics differs fundamentally from conventional solar or thermal energy.
While with solar cells only the area from which light is converted into electricity counts, neutrinovoltaics works with the entire volume of the material. Every cubic centimetre contributes to power generation. The energy arises from interactions between special nanomaterials (graphene-silicon structures) and invisible energy sources such as neutrinos, heat fluctuations and other radiation that are constantly present everywhere.
The basic equation shows: the larger the active material volume, the higher the efficiency of the material and the stronger the incident ambient energy, the more electrical energy is generated.
These formulations are physically measurable and not mere theoretical ideas. They prove that neutrinovoltaics is a serious, mathematically founded process. It thus represents a paradigm shift in energy generation: electricity from previously barely used, invisible sources, independent of time of day or weather. This can lead to more independence, stability and sustainability – beyond the limits of classical solar energy.
Explanation in scientific language
From the derived mathematical formulations it becomes clear that neutrinovoltaics works on a fundamentally different physical basis from conventional photovoltaic or thermoelectric processes. The main equation shows that the electrical energy obtained arises from volumetric interactions between omnipresent subatomic and ambient energy carriers (neutrinos, thermal fluctuations and other invisible radiation spectra) and technically produced nanostructured materials. Unlike area-limited solar conversion, the energy yield in this case scales with the volume of the active medium, since every cubic centimetre contributes to the conversion process.
The symbolic short form summarises this principle. It shows that the effective energy output is directly proportional to the material-specific conversion efficiency, the integrated flux density of the ambient energy and the active volume of the graphene-silicon structure.
This formulation preserves dimensional consistency and highlights the advantage of volumetric scaling. These equations are not heuristic metaphors but mathematically consistent representations based on interaction cross-sections and measurable flux densities. They show that neutrinovoltaics is a quantifiable, physically rigorous process and not a speculative concept. By extending energy harvesting to the domain of weakly interacting particles and fluctuating fields, neutrinovoltaics introduces a paradigm shift in decentralised energy generation – an energy technology that can ensure independence, resilience and sustainability beyond the inherent limits of surface-bound solar energy harvesting.
